Documenting Hawai’i Past and Present<\/strong>
This shorts program showcases a selection of treasured historical moving image and film from Hawaii’s past from the \u2018Ulu\u2018Ulu Archives – including new additions to the archives not yet available to the public. The program also features two short documentaries by Vince Ricafort, Mikey Inouye and Christine Yuan about Honolulu youth engaging in image-making of their own. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
College Conundrums<\/strong>
Screening of “Ivory Tower” (2014) followed by discussion on higher ed and Hawai\u2018i with Manulani Aluli Meyer. As tuition rates skyrocket and student loan debt passes the $1 trillion mark, “Ivory Tower” asks: Is college worth the cost? From the halls of Harvard, to public colleges in financial crisis, to Silicon Valley, Emmy Award nominated filmmaker Andrew Rossi assembles an urgent portrait of a great American institution at the breaking point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Food (+ Land) <\/strong>
Screening of “The Garden” (2008) preceded by excerpts from documentaries on local struggles over land access in Hawaii. The Academy Award nominated feature film depicts the success and struggles of the largest urban farm in the U.S. Created in response to the 1992 L.A. riots, the 14-acre garden in South Central Los Angeles flourished before a back room real estate deal threatened its future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
